When should you upgrade a switchboard in Melbourne?
Not every old board needs ripping out tomorrow. Plenty do need a plan before the next renovation, EV charger, or hot day when half the house loads up.

Signs the board is due
- Ceramic or rewireable fuses still in place, or a mix of old and new gear with no clear labels.
- No safety switches (RCDs) on power and lighting circuits, or one RCD protecting everything so one fault kills the whole place.
- The board is full. No spare ways for a new circuit, air conditioner, oven, or shed supply.
- Breakers that feel hot, buzz, or trip under normal load.
- A renovation or kitchen remodel that needs more points and lighting than the existing circuits can carry.
Those are the jobs that turn into call-outs later. Upgrading on purpose is usually cleaner than patching after a fault on a Friday night.
Safety and compliance, not cosmetics
A modern board is about isolation and earth leakage protection. RCBOs (combined breaker and RCD on each circuit) mean one wet outdoor point does not take out the lights. Surge protection can sit on the board where storms or grid spikes are a problem. Labelling matters so the next electrician, or you at 2am, can find the right switch.
Energy Safe Victoria registers electrical contractors and expects installation work to be documented. We are REC 27575. When a switchboard upgrade needs a Certificate of Electrical Safety, it is issued as part of the job. We do not invent awards or licence claims; the REC number is the one that matters.
Renovations and more circuits
Kitchen and bathroom renovations almost always need new circuits, better lighting, and sometimes a temporary supply while the walls are open. That is why board work and renovation electrical travel together. Builders we work with, including JTW Building Group on building jobs, want the board sorted before joinery lands so nobody is chasing power with the benches already in.
Extra circuits for a garage, workshop, three-phase pump, or outbuilding often need a sub-board as well as space in the main board. That is planned work: look at the supply, the load, and access, then price it before anything is cut in.
Solar, batteries, and heavier loads
Solar inverters, battery systems, and larger air conditioning often expose a board that was fine for a 1990s load profile. The main switch rating, neutral arrangements, and spare ways all matter before new generation or storage is added. We do not claim Clean Energy Council accreditation we do not hold. We do the electrical side of the board and the circuits, and we coordinate with the solar crew when they are on site.
Heat pumps, induction cooktops, and workshop machinery push the same issue: the supply and the board have to carry the load without nuisance trips. A walk-through with a clamp meter and a clear load list beats guessing from a photo of the cover.
When an upgrade can wait
If the board already has RCBOs, clear labels, spare ways, and no heat or trip history, you may only need a single new circuit. We say so. There is no value in selling a full replacement when a tidy addition will do. Middy's and Voltex gear shows up on a lot of Melbourne jobs; we use trade-quality parts that match the install, not whatever is cheapest on a shelf.
Insurance or real-estate reports sometimes flag “upgrade recommended”. That is useful context, not an automatic full rip-out. We inspect, explain what is unsafe versus what is merely dated, and quote the work that actually needs doing.
What the visit looks like
We agree on a time and look at what is actually needed: the board, the wiring, the access. You get a price before any work starts. Or we can do and charge when that suits. Outages are planned so fridges and network gear are not a surprise. All our work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty.
